LANSING, Mich. (AP) — President Donald Trump has offered rare praise for Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer as she appeared with him in the Oval Office. The second-term Democratic governor stood awkwardly feet from Trump as he signed executive orders yesterday. It came not long after she delivered a speech nearby that offered soft criticism of him but emphasized shared priorities. Whitmer was in Washington delivering a “Build, America, Build” address that only raised speculation about a 2028 presidential run. She was at the White House to talk about tariffs that were expected to disproportionately affect her state, though Trump announced a pause on tariffs aside from China.

BAYFIELD - The Kim Kingsley animal abuse case continues. The former Washburn man pleaded not guilty late last week to 58 various charges of animal abuse. Kingsley, 73, stands accused of mistreating horses kept on his property in Bell. 16 of those horses were removed and are being kept in Bayfield County custody. A veterinarian who viewed the property at the time of the seizure said the animals were being kept in poor conditions. Kingsley has stated that all of the horses on his property, an estimated 50 along with the 16 seized were wild mustangs and were unable to be handled. Kingsley’s next court appearance is scheduled for September 1st, with the trial expected to last about a week. If convicted on all counts and given the maximum sentences, he could be facing more than 50 years in prison.
