IRONWOOD - On Saturday, a number of communities in the U.P. will take part in a nationwide series of protests demanding change in the U.S. government.

“Hands Off!” protests are scheduled for Marquette, Escanaba, Houghton, Ironwood and Sault Ste. Marie. Paul Hughes, co-organizer of Lake Superior Indivisible says that at least 300 people are expected to walk in the Marquette protest. Indivisible is a national organization that says its mission is to elect progressive leaders, rebuild democracy and defeat the current administration’s agenda. For more information on where each of these protests will take place and what to expect, go to mobilize.us/map. In Ironwood the protest will take place at Ironwood City Square at noon Saturday.

MARQUETTE - Planned Parenthood of Michigan says it will permanently close its Marquette Health Center, their only center in the U.P. effective Apr. 30, with the last patient appointments taking place Apr. 25.  According to Planned Parenthood of Michigan, the Trump administration is moving to freeze $27.5 million Title X family planning funds due to alleged violations of the president’s ‘DEI’ executive orders.  For most of Upper Michigan, the closest Planned Parenthood location after the closures will in Green Bay, Wisconsin or Traverse City.

DETROIT (AP) — The Michigan Supreme Court has ruled that the odor of marijuana alone isn't reason enough for police to search a car without a warrant. The ruling Wednesday comes nearly seven years after Michigan voters legalized the possession and use of the drug by people who are at least 21 years old. The court threw out gun charges against a man whose car was searched in Detroit in 2020. Justice Megan Cavanagh, writing for the majority, wrote that the smell of marijuana “no longer constitutes probable cause sufficient to support a search" for something possibly illegal.
