UPPER MICHIGAN - Primitive roadside parks in the U.P will be closing for the season tomorrow. Some parks in the lower part of the state will remain open til late November. The Michigan Department of Transportation maintains 85 roadside parks around the state. Most of the roadside parks are rustic facilities and would cease to be functional during cold weather and heavy snow would block access and weather could possibly keep campers from leaving those sites. Also, each year, the parks are maintained by county road commissions and require a start and end date for their maintenance agreements. Modern rest areas will remain open year-round, as well as Michigan Welcome Centers in Marquette, Menominee and Iron Mountain.
