MICHIGAN - A bill increasing unemployment benefits is on its way to Governor Whitmer.  Senate Bill 40 would increase weekly benefits from $362 to $614 by 2027.  The bill also would extend the unemployment eligibility period from 20 weeks to 26 weeks.  Small Business Association of Michigan CEO Brian Calley says this could have a drastic impact on the Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund, which is where the benefits come from.  According to the Senate Fiscal Agency, payouts would surpass the fund’s revenue by 2027. Calley explains this could mean employers may have to pay more for the fund.  During Tuesday’s House Session, 59 representatives, including Republicans Greg Markkanen and Dave Prestin voted in favor of this legislation.
