ONTONAGON COUNTY - The Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Department say they have located 78-year-old Richard Joseph Schaefer, who was previously reported missing last Wednesday afternoon when he left his home in his vehicle from Greenland Township and did not return. Undersheriff Charles A. Pantti, Schaefer was found alive just before noon on Sunday, in a wooded area just under two miles of M26 near the Firesteel Bridges. He was transported by SONCO EMS for treatment of dehydration and exposure. The Ontonagon County Sheriff’s office would like to thank the USFS Forest Service and Law Enforcement, Michigan DNR, Michigan State Police, Houghton County Sheriff’s Dept., Greenland Fire Dept., Houghton County Emergency services personnel, Negaunee Regional Dispatch, and all private citizens that volunteered time.
