IRONWOOD - The director of the Carnegie Library in Ironwood has asked the city for a donation to help raise funds for new windows and breezeway. The library is currently under renovation and has already received a grant of $ 750,000 from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity for most of the project last year. The director of the Library, Lynne Wiercinski, has said that if $50,000 can be raised locally, the Michigan Economic Development Commission will match it with another $50,000, for a total of $100,000. The Friends of the Library are holding a fundraising campaign through Patronicity to help raise those funds. Wiercinski also pointed out that the historic library is the cornerstone of the city, having been open since 1902. City Commissioner James Mildren was in support of the effort and said the city would have to look at finances before saying yes to a contribution and Commissioner David Andresen ventured that perhaps the city might be able to engage in a creative matching initiative of its own. Wiercinski will go before the City Commission before the Patronicity campaign closes out at the end of June to get a decision on her request.

VILAS COUNTY - The Wisconsin Department of Health Services State Opioid Response has given The Vilas County Youth Coalition $17,000 to combat opioid use in Northern Wisconsin from the Marshfield Clinic region of Sanford Health. The funding will go to pre-approved projects focused on reducing health issues connected to opioids and other drugs in Vilas County. The funding received by the Vilas County Youth Coalition is a part of $700,000 that the Marshfield Clinic region of Sanford Health has invested in 31 communities across Wisconsin. Funding helps support drug takeback events, Naloxone distribution, sharps disposal events, community awareness and anti-stigma campaigns, and drug checking technology distribution, such as fentanyl test and xylazine test strips.
