IRONWOOD - Considered one of the world’s toughest races, the Red Bull 400 is returning to the iconic 35-degree, 470-foot ski flying hill at Copper Peak in Ironwood after a six-year hiatus. The event has been held at Copper Peak twice before, in 2018 and 2019. The popular spring race is scheduled for May 10 this year. More than 800 participants from all over the globe are expected to start at the bottom and race 400 meters uphill to the top of the largest artificial ski jump tower in the world. The nearly vertical race challenges athletes speed and endurance. Find out more about the race and register at redbull.com. Gogebic Community College in Ironwood announced on Facebook that they have several students that will compete in the race.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A former Michigan public health official is launching a bid to represent the state in the U.S. Senate as the 2026 race for control of the chamber takes shape. Abdul El-Sayed ran for Michigan governor in 2018 as a progressive Democrat and lost the primary to current Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. He's the second candidate to launch his campaign this week along with Republican Mike Rogers. El-Sayed will face state Sen. Mallory McMorrow in the Democratic primary. Others are also weighing bids. Michigan is poised to be one of the most watched states in 2026 midterm elections with open races for the governor's office and a U.S. Senate seat.

ST. GERMAIN - The St. Germain man accused of first-degree murder appeared in Vilas County Court late last week and waived his right to a preliminary hearing. 56-year-old James Johnson stands accused of first-degree intentional homicide and use of a dangerous weapon in the stabbing death of his sister, 61-year-old Kelly Johnson at their home in St. Germain on March 21st. As he has waived his preliminary hearing, Johnson will appear in court again on the 21st for his arraignment. Vilas County judge Martha Milanowski has found probably cause so the case will proceed. If convicted of 1st degree murder, Johnson faces life in prison. That sentence may increase by not more than five years if he’s convicted for use of a dangerous weapon as well.
