IRONWOOD - Ironwood and the Michigan Baseball Congress have reached an agreement that will bring adult baseball to the city and make improvements to Randa Field as part of the deal. City Manager Paul Anderson was approached by the congress about bringing adult baseball to the area. The group, called the Great Lakes Baseball League presented the city committee with an extensive proposal, including a complete marketing plan and a schedule that involves 16 teams playing 64 games a year along with a preseason. Not only will the league pay the city $100 a day to rent the field, and a cut of the outfield fence advertising, but it is prepared to pay for improvements to the field, including bleachers, a press box and concession stand, scoreboard, new dugouts and re-sodding the field to the tune of almost $60K. The main request of the league is that the city maintain the outfield. As with the Lumberjacks hockey team, its hoped that not only will there be jobs for locals, but that the games will bring in more business in the spring and summer months. The city attorney is expected to go over the agreement before its made official. The next meeting of the Ironwood City Council will be on December 5th.
