LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II is running to become the state's next Democratic governor. Gilchrist announced yesterday his Democratic bid to succeed term-limited Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. Gilchrist became Michigan's first Black lieutenant governor in 2019 and is in his second-term. He joins Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson in the Democratic primary. The winner will face the tough challenge of competing against independent gubernatorial candidate Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and the Republican primary winner.
