WAKEFIELD / TORONTO (AP) — Ontario’s premier, the leader of Canada’s most populous province, is now charging 25% more for electricity shipped to 1.5 million American homes and businesses in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff plan. Ontario provides electricity to Minnesota, New York and Michigan. Ontario Premier Doug Ford says Ontario’s tariff would remain in place despite the one-month reprieve from Trump, noting a one-month pause is just more uncertainty. Ford estimated the new tariff will add about $69 a month to the bills of each American affected.  The city of Wakefield issuing a press release in response reassuring its customers that the 25% surcharge will not affect Wakefield’s electric rates.  According to Wakefield City Manager Robert Brown Wakefield electricity is generated domestically within the Midcontinent Independent System operator’s footprint and is transmitted to the city through infrastructure owned by Xcel Energy.  Therefore, these regulatory measures will not affect Wakefield electric customers.
