MANITOWISH WATERS — A 33-year-old Hurley woman faces embezzlement charges after stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from a Vilas County business.   Alesha Swanson faces over a decade in jail on charges of theft of more than $100,000 in a business setting and fraud.   According to a criminal complaint, On September 10, 2024, Vilas County law enforcement opened an investigation into an embezzlement complaint after owners of Jim Meier Builders, LLC were alerted to suspicious business checks. Swanson had been employed as the secretary at the Manitowish Waters based business for the past eight years then abruptly left the company after the suspicious checks came to light in Sept. 2024.  The defendant stated to police that she suffers from schizophrenia and does not have a memory of many of the alleged fraud claims she’s accused of.  Swanson has an initial appearance set for March 31 in Vilas County Court.
