UPPER MICHIGAN - The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has announced that residents wanting fuelwood for home heating or other personal use can now apply for a permit that allows collection on select state managed land in the Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Peninsula. After the ice storm in March, there is an abundance of wood on the ground. Permits are limited to one per household per year, and allows the collection of five standard cords of wood. Residents in the designated 12-county emergency area will be allowed to collect ten cords. Permits are valid for 90 days after they are issued, but expire December 31st. Permits are available by mail from the DNR office, in person at customer service centers and a few forestry field offices or online at mdnr.elicense.com.
