LANSING, Mich. (AP) — State Sen. Mallory McMorrow, a rising star of the Democratic Party, has officially announced her bid for Michigan's open U.S. Senate seat. First elected in 2018, McMorrow rose to national fame in 2022 with a fiery floor speech criticizing a Republican lawmaker who attacked her in a campaign fundraising email and accused her of “grooming” children for supporting LGBTQ+ rights. McMorrow is the first well-known candidate to officially announce she is running for the Senate seat in 2026 after Democrat Gary Peters said earlier this year that he is not seeking reelection, setting up what will undoubtedly be an expensive and competitive race.
