ASHLAND COUNTY - A public hearing on Enbridge’s Line 5 pipeline will be held on June 4th. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has submitted a draft proposal regarding the pipeline, its safety and where it crosses the Bad River Tribe Reservation. The Bad River tribe has filed a federal lawsuit to make Enbridge remove the segment of Line 5 that runs through tribal land. The reroute proposed by the Corps replaces approximately 20 miles of the existing Line 5 pipeline with 41 miles of a new segment located entirely outside the boundaries of the reservation. Tribal elders say the route is still located near the reservation and therefore would continue to present a hazard to treaty-protected resources.
