BESSEMER – The Gambles building in downtown Bessemer is no more.  Demolition of the building started Wednesday.  The building has sat empty for more than 10 years and has gone through a number of different owners.  The building was stripped of its copper and heating system by those owners and left to rot.  The cost of the demolition was almost a quarter of a million dollars.  Gogebic County helped secure the funding for the demolition from the State Land Bank Authority blight elimination grant.  Clean up of the lot will take place over the next few weeks.  The city hopes to sell the lot to someone that has plans to build a business on the site.
