BAYFIELD COUNTY - New legislation introduced by Wisconsin lawmakers could soon bring the first national park to the area, with the designation of the Apostle Islands raising some concerns by those that live in the area. There are some residents in Bayfield who are concerned about the change, and some would like a public forum before the legislature gets the proposal to pass a bill to change the national lakeshore to a national park. Hunting would no long be allowed if the islands become a national park. There are ongoing debates and questions among tribal leaders regarding the effect changing the area’s designation would have. Representative Tom Tiffany plans to hold an informational telephone town hall meeting to answer questions regarding the proposal on September 4th.
