IRONWOOD – Power outages affecting the Ironwood area for nearly 6 hours yesterday.  The lights went out at about 3:15 yesterday affecting Ironwood, parts of the townships and Mercer.  Xcel Energy originally estimated the power would be restored by 6pm but the lights didn’t come back on until almost 9.  In Ironwood the outage mainly affected areas East of Douglas Blvd., affecting our broadcast signal and taking out traffic lights on US-2 at Lake and Luxmore Street in Ironwood and in the township at the Walmart intersection causing chaos for drivers. When traffic signals are out the intersection is to be considered a 4-way stop but while some drivers observed that rule others didn’t.  During the outage Ironwood police and Fire were called to Tractor Supply to a report a possible electrical fire.  Fire crews found nothing and cleared the scene. The shopping complex was also affected by the power outage.  With the power out and temperatures in the 90s with a heat index near 100 degrees many in Ironwood headed to the Hurley DQ one of the only restaurants still open and with power causing long lines for those trying to beat the heat.
