ASHLAND - A nonprofit peer support organization in Ashland may have to close its doors soon. Genesis 1990 opened as a National Institute of Mental Health-funded demonstration project in August of 1990. The organization provides mental health support in the form of men’s and women’s groups, a recovery group and walk-in Narcan distribution among other services. The center will not be receiving a $30,000 grant from the state as it has in the past. Although the center has applied for other grant funding, if and when those funds come through leaves a gap in finances for the center. The thing that makes Genesis 1990 special is that although one can find counseling elsewhere, the relationships formed through peer support can be invaluable in helping someone who is struggling see the light at the end of the tunnel. The center is selling cookbooks as part of its fundraising effort and has started a GoFundMe page. More information is available on Genesis 1990’s Facebook page.
