HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer speaks at a Trump Rally in downstate Michigan yesterday. Whitmer and President Donald Trump even shared a hug as he arrived in the state yesterday. President Donald Trump was in Michigan yesterday to celebrate the first 100 days of his second term and to announce a new fighter jet mission for an Air National Guard base in Michigan. The encounter between the Republican president and the potential 2028 Democratic presidential candidate risked inviting a second round of backlash for Whitmer from her party’s base. Earlier this month, Whitmer shielded her face from cameras during an Oval Office appearance alongside Trump, during which he signed executive orders and assailed his political opponents. Whitmer tells The Associated Press her job is to look out for Michigan's best interests. Whitmer credits her relationship with Trump for securing a new fighter jet mission important to her state.
